Long-Term Occupational Projections
The Massachusetts Industry-Occupation Employment Projection Matrix for 2020-2030 reflects the unique mix of 662 occupations and 122 industries in Massachusetts and are available for both occupations and industries. Long-Term Industry Projections are also available.

Beginning with these projections a new BLS Separations methodology is used to project annual openings. The Separations methodology was developed to better capture a more accurate picture of the workforce and give BLS the ability to differentiate between workers who leave the labor force entirely; exits, and those who are changing jobs and leaving an occupation, transfers. The annual openings are the sum of the projected net change plus transfers plus exits.

These 10-year forecasts, which are updated every other year, are intended to help individuals make informed education and career decisions and assist educators and training providers in planning for future needs. The projections currently cover the 2020-2030 period.

NOTE: Due to the significant economic impact from COVID-19, the 2020 base employment level will reflect this and occupations that are in recovery may exhibit a higher than normal growth rate.

Employment
The base year is 2018 annual average employment for the sector or occupation listed. The
projected year is 2028.
Net Change
This is the difference in employment from 2018 to 2028.
Percent Change
The percentage change is the growth from the base year to the projected year.
Annual Change
The annual change in employment due to projection.
Annual Exits
Annual number of workers who are leaving the labor force entirely.
Annual Transfers
Annual number of those who are changing jobs and leaving an occupation go to another
occupation.
Annual Openings
Annual openings = Projected Change + Exits + Transfers
Average Annual OES Wage
Occupational Employment Statistics Annual Mean Wage is listed for each industry or occupation
or industry/occupation combination.
Notes
Industry/Occupation matrix are obtained by applying occupational staffing patterns from the
OES to produce base year occupational employment estimates. In turn, expected staffing pattern
changes are applied to the base year pattern. The modified staffing patterns are then applied to

EDUCATION LEVEL
This category best describes the typical level of education that most workers need to enter a
particular occupation. Each occupation is assigned one of the following eight education levels:
Doctoral or professional degree. Completion of a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) usually requires at
least 3 years of full-time academic work beyond a bachelor's degree. Completion of a professional
degree usually requires at least 3 years of full-time academic study beyond a bachelor's degree.
Examples of occupations for which a doctoral or professional degree is the typical form of
entry-level education include lawyers, physicists, and dentists.
Master's degree. Completion of this degree usually requires 1 or 2 years of full-time academic
study beyond a bachelor's degree. Examples of occupations in this category include statisticians,
physician assistants, and educational, guidance, school, and vocational counselors.
Bachelor's degree. Completion of this degree generally requires at least 4 years, but not more
than 5 years, of full-time academic study beyond high school. Examples of occupations in this
category include budget analysts, dietitians and nutritionists, and civil engineers.
Associate's degree. Completion of this degree usually requires at least 2 years but not more than
4 years of full-time academic study beyond high school. Examples of occupations in this category
include mechanical drafters, respiratory therapists, and dental hygienists.
Postsecondary nondegree award. These programs lead to a certificate or other award, but not a
degree. The certificate is awarded by the educational institution and is the result of completing
formal postsecondary schooling. Certification, issued by a professional organization or certifying
body, is not included here. Some postsecondary nondegree award programs last only a few
weeks, while others may last 1 to 2 years. Examples of occupations in this category include
nursing assistants, emergency medical technicians (EMT's) and paramedics, and hairstylists.
Some college, no degree. This category signifies the achievement of a high school diploma or
equivalent plus the completion of one or more postsecondary courses that did not result in a
degree or award. An example of an occupation in this category is actors.
High school diploma or equivalent. This category indicates the completion of high school or an
equivalent program resulting in the award of a high school diploma or an equivalent, such as the
General Education Development (GED) credential. Examples of occupations in this category
include social and human service assistants, carpenters, and pharmacy technicians.
No formal educational credential. This category signifies that a formal credential issued by an
educational institution, such as a high school diploma or postsecondary certificate, is not
typically needed for entry into the occupation. Examples of occupations in this category include
janitors and cleaners, cashiers, and agricultural equipment operators.


Occupational employment projections use current and historical data to project how employment in various occupations will change over time. These projections include information on employment, growth, wages, and required education state-wide or by Workforce Development Area (WDA).

Interactive Data Dashboards
IMPACT dashboards tell powerful data stories using maps, charts and tables based on complex analyses. These pre-built dashboards allow for interactive analysis and data exploration specific to a given data theme in a range of categories.

Data Query and Visualization

Using the Data Query and Visualization tool you can conduct simple to sophisticated data queries to generate subsets of the crash data. This may be done at the crash level, the vehicle level or the person level. Once generated you can then visualize the data in three core ways: on charts, on tables, or spatially on a map. Though noted separately, these elements all work in tandem providing the ability to switch between the visualization methods seamlessly.

Data Extraction

Using the data extraction service, you can request publicly available data by municipality and date range in several formats. The standard data report request form should be used when trying to obtain datasets of town-wide crash data for specific years. In addition, a link is provided to MassDOT’s Open Data Portal for more large-scale data download capabilities where the entire crash data file may be downloaded for each year.

Reports
IMPACT provides a suite of pre-built reports for rapid access to cleanly organized information across a spectrum of categories. Some reports are configurable given desired date ranges and all are downloadable in several formats.

Crash Tabulation and Charting

IMPACT provides this tool to aggregate selected data in a matrix to display two or more variables. The crosstab provides summary data and can be used to summarize the full crash database as well as subsets of the data, based on the user selected variables.

Safety Analysis Tools
IMPACT provides several safety analysis tools focused on network screening and diagnosis. Network screening includes both Spot and Systemic mapping. Diagnosis tools include a Crash Tree Maker and a Site Proportions tool.
